Can Artificial Intelligence Improve Entertainment?

A lot of has been said about Artificial Intelligence, and the impact it has had on entertainment. For one, many companies are trying to use AI to completely eliminate the artist and creator, and for the most part, the general population is staunchly against it. After all, by removing the human element of art, we are left with nothing.

On the other hand, if artists and creators can use A.I. to improve their product, that would serve a pretty great purpose. AI and machine learning can have a pretty big impact on the gaming industry especially. However, there are other aspects of entertainment that could benefit from the use of artificial intelligence. In this article, we’d like to explore those benefits.

iGaming Could Become Safer

Since the 1990s, iGaming has become one of the biggest entertainment industries in the world. For those who don’t know, iGaming refers to any and all forms of gambling online. Whether we are talking about mobile casino games, online slots, or even sports betting, the term encompasses it all. But, how can machine learning benefit iGaming?

One of the proposed ways that A.I. could have a profoundly positive impact on iGaming is by making the entire industry much safer. Already, online casino operators have done their best to keep their websites secure and their customers safe. However, with artificial intelligence on their side, they could do a much better job.

One notable example, proposed by many casino operators, is that A.I. could be used to monitor player activity. If a player behaves abnormal, the A.I. could spot that, and inform a human operator. Then, they would simply get into contact with the player, and ask if everything is alright.

Better Match-Ups in Online Gaming

Online games have become notoriously popular. Most people in 2023 prefer to play multiplayer and test their skills against other gamers from all over the world. However, this does pose one tiny problem; not all of us are equally skilled.

It can be quite discouraging to get into a match with a person whose skill-level far exceeds our own. However, with a good algorithm backed by machine learning, mismatches may become a thing of the past. The A.I. could potentially find players whose skills and levels match as closely as possible, creating a much more fair and balanced game.

Better NPCs

RPGs are, perhaps, some of the most popular and well-respected games in the gaming world. Titles like Elden Ring, Baldur’s Gate 3, and the Elder Scrolls are by far some of the most popular games in the world. While all of these games get a lot of praise and respect from the general audiences, there is one thing that most people would criticize; the in-game NPCs.

From generic appearance to generic dialogue, NPCs often get a bad reputation. We aren’t necessarily including the big ones, like villains or companions. But, the generic NPCs certainly could be done a lot better. One of the reasons why these characters aren’t so fleshed out, is because developers don’t have time to code individual dialogues and backstories for each of them.

With A.I. at least one half of that could be fixed. Machine learning algorithms could be programmed to generate unique and interesting dialogue, depending entirely on the situation, player interaction, and environment. The development leads to a boost in immersion, making the player feel like they truly inhabit another world, instead of reminding them that they are playing a video game.

Even Sports Could Be Improved

Most people don’t consider the effect that A.I. would have on sports. However, think about all of the times that the audience disagrees with the referee. Jeers and screams could very easily be eliminated, if referees used artificial intelligence to observe the game and lead to much more accurate decisions.

For example, let us say that a football player got a penalty shot. The A.I. could analyze the situation, and do a 1:1 replay of the events in question. Human referees could then decide whether the penalty is well-deserved, or whether the player pulled one intentionally. The same principle could be applied to any sport, ensuring for better and more entertaining games.
